Model of Care
NOW Jr. serves people from ages 12 to 19. We specialize in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A), individual therapy, and family therapy. Medication management is also available; our providers cannot prescribe ADHD medications.
For most people, behavioral health difficulties occur occasionally, with symptoms that may vary in type and severity over time. NOW Jr. treatment was developed to fit this pattern. Clients receive intensive services early in treatment and during periods when symptoms are worse and less intensive services in times of greater wellness. Treatment episodes at NOW Jr. typically last 3–4 months. Counselors and clients work together to identify signs that clients may need to return for additional counseling sessions.
Our care coordination team will work with every individual to create long-term care plans.
Services Offered
Counseling
DBT-A
Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) is a form of therapy for teens who are dealing with issues related to emotional control and interpersonal problems. This approach uses specialized individual, group, or family sessions, along with skills coaching and consultation calls.
Individual Therapy
Individual counseling helps clients build skills that empower them to recognize and manage their symptoms on their own. Over time, this decreases their need for services.
Family Therapy
These services help clients build stronger relationships, improve family dynamics, and provide a space to share experiences or concerns with parents or other family members.
Medication Management
In-house medical providers are available for adolescents who participate in the NOW Jr. program. We do not prescribe medications for or treat ADHD and Autism Spectrum disorders.
Case Management
NOW case managers help clients with needs such as health insurance, prescription assistance, food, housing, transportation, disability services, legal services, and community support.
Crisis Support
NOW Jr. provides crisis support to clients through the Living Room, an area at the UT Health San Antonio Behavioral Health and Wellness Center. The Living Room is open Monday–Friday, 8 AM–4 PM, and clients may call ahead or come to the Living Room without an appointment. There, a counselor helps clients having a mental health crisis, such as a panic attack, a large increase in stress, worsening mental health symptoms, or the urge to do something that could have negative effects, such as hurting oneself. The goal is to help clients cope with a crisis and avoid hospitalization.
